Jul 20, 2007
Leading German car manufacturer Audi joined Mr. Frank Burbach, Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Hong Kong, Mr. Frederick Ma Si-hang, Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development of the HKSAR Government and internationally renowned actress Ms. Maggie Cheung in unveiling an exciting new sculpture, "The Automobile" at Chater Garden, Central. The "Germany: Land of Ideas – The Automobile Sculpture Exhibition" was opened for public visit during July 20 to August 3, 2007.
The mega sculpture was created by Audi's Design Department in Germany and bears the unmistakable design features of the world-renowned Audi TT, at 2.5 times the scale of the production model. The sculpture stands 10.20 metres long, 4.50 metres wide and 3.25 metres high and had to be shipped to Asia in one of the world's largest cargo aeroplanes. Fashioned on a steel frame from a modern foam plastic created in Germany called Neopor®, the sculpture weighs in at an impressive 10 tonnes. During the unveiling ceremony, renowned German dance group the Metropolitans performed a routine especially created to symbolize the innovation and energy of Germany.

"The Automobile", framed by the heart of HongKong's central business district, was displayed for an international audience as the world directs its attention towards Hong Kong and Germany, linking the dynamism and energy of this metropolitan city to the innovation and progressiveness of Germany - the land of the car.
