All important checkpoints at a glance:
Paint finishExamine your chosen car in good light conditions, looking for scratches and dents from an angle. Take a thorough look at the exterior.
AccidentsUneven gaps and transitions on the doors, bonnet, luggage compartment lid, mudguards etc. should give you cause for suspicion. Can you find traces of extra coats of paint such as paint mist, “orange peel” or differences in colour?
RustCheck wheel arches, underbody, exhaust.
DetailsExamine the headlight glass and the exterior lights. Check the interior, the luggage compartment and the hood if it’s a convertible. Can you find excessive amounts of wear? Take your time over it.
Engine compartmentCan you see repair marks? What condition are the add-on parts in, e.g. the battery? Check oil, water and acid levels. Can you detect signs that the car has only been serviced recently?
Engine operationListen out for uneven or unusual engine noises such as chattering or rattling. The idle speed should be constant.
