There’s a party going down in Johannesburg.

At the heart of the gyrating crowd is the Audi A3 Sportback e-tron. This setting is also the key to the story in which two DJs play the role of puppeteers using the controls on their mixing boards to bring the car’s various strengths into harmony: The benefits of electric drive are combined with those of a combustion engine. Thumping bass from Daniel Avery’s hit “Drone Logic” booms through the set as the Audi A3 Sportback e-tron shows off its moves and endurance — even though dancing is not really its forte.

The following night, in the middle of nowhere, a myriad of customized LEDs bathe a country roadan hour outside the South African metropolis of Johannesburg in brightly colored light. The director gives the famous instruction: “Action!” The lead actor, a red Audi A3 Sportback e-tron, sprints through a tunnel of light. To everyone’s surprise a couple of private cars drive past the set, demonstrating that the African version of a roadblock is not always entirely impassable. Shortly before dawn on this cold South African winter’s night, the crew, bundled in warm winter jackets, await the arrival of the new e-tron commercial’s surprise star — a three-meter-tall Rothschild’s giraffe, which will stride majestically through the lighting installation. But the graceful giant is playing hard to get. First, zebras and gnus are guided through the light tunnel; the giraffe will only go where its fellow savannah dwellers have already safely passed. Finally, after a long wait, the giraffe ventures into the beam of light. A reverential silence grips the crew. Soon this scene, too, is a wrap and everyone leaves the bush behind to return to the city.

The spectacular “Perfect Mix” commercial will air on German TV this fall, as winter begins to announce itself in the north and summer finally returns to South Africa.
