The interior is also dominated by refined sportiness. It is characterized by high quality workmanship and customary S design. The optional ambient lighting skilfully sets the scene, while the decorative inlays, optionally made of grey, natural oak, black piano lacquer, or Carbon Atlas, create elegant contrasts.
The spacious interior appears even greater thanks to the strong horizontal designs. A widely spread out air vent array, an elegant climate control panel, and a large decorative surface subdivide the instrument panel. The MMI monitor acts as a tablet computer, and in darkness LED light guides trace the contours of the doors and the centre console - with the optional ambient lighting in 30 colours.
The excellent aeroacoustics ensure a low noise level in the interior. Typical of an S model, the colour black is dominant. The decorative inlays create elegant contrasts. In the standard configuration they are made from matt, brushed aluminium, optionally from grey natural oak, black piano lacquer, or Carbon Atlas.
The S sports seats
The optional S sports seats are covered in fine nappa leather. Audi supplies the covers in black, rotor grey, and magma red (exclusive to the S models) with diamond quilting and contrasting seams in rock grey, anthracite, and granite grey. The S sports seats feature adjustable sides, integrated headrests, and a pneumatic massage function. As an alternative to the standard configuration steering wheel with multifunction plus, there are versions with heated and flat-bottomed rim.
High-quality details round off the features. They include the pedals and footrest in stainless steel, a differentiated S instrument cluster with grey dials and white needles, the red ring around the start button, the special start-up screen for the Audi MMI, and the optional Audi virtual cockpit. The S marking with red diamond can be found on the steering wheel, the frame of the shift gate, the illuminated door sill trims, and as embossed leather on the seats.
Display and control panel
All functions in the new S4 Avant are intuitively controlled thanks to the new control and display concept. The optional Audi virtual cockpit and the fully digital instrument cluster display all important information on a 12.3 inch TFT screen with brilliant resolution, with a high level of detail, and extensively calculated effects. The "View" button on the leather sports steering wheel with multifunction plus is used to change between the display views. Three views are available, including an exclusive sport mode with tachometer as the dominant element. The new MMI controls in the centre console serve as the main control element. With the MMI navigation plus with MMI touch, the rotary push button integrates a touchpad to zoom the map and for entering characters. As with a smartphone the MMI's operating logic is designed to have as few steps as possible, including an intelligent text search, the so-called MMI search. The new voice control system also processes terms and phrases used in everyday language, such as: "Where can I fill up?"
The head-up display is another high-end option of the S4 Avant - it projects relevant information as symbols and numerals on the windshield. They seem to float about two feet in front of the driver in a 200 x 80 mm window. The eye, accustomed to distance vision, recognises them extremely quickly.
