S tronic®

The S tronic combines the efficiency and sportiness of a conventional manual transmission with the comfort of a modern automatic transmission. The dual-clutch transmission allows fast shifting with virtually no interruption in traction. The vehicle accelerates harmoniously and dynamically.

Already in 1985, Audi tested the technology of the dual-clutch transmission in the Sport quattro S1 and was enthusiastic. Enthusiasm that Audi drivers can understand. Because the 6-speed S tronic changes the gears in less than 0.2 seconds. For this purpose, it integrates two multi-plate clutches that operate different gears. A large clutch transmits the torque via a solid shaft to the gears of the odd gears. A compact second clutch supplies the straight gears via a hollow shaft. The two partial transmissions are permanently active, but only one is permanently connected to the engine. For example, if the vehicle accelerates in third gear, only the first partial transmission transmits the power. In the second partial transmission, however, the fourth gear is already engaged. When switching then not only the gear changes, but equal to the clutch - and that in a few hundredths of a second. So fast and flowing that the driver hardly perceives him.

The 6-speed S tronic offers the driver the choice between manual and automatic mode: whether the driver selects the fully automatic mode with the programs D (Drive) and S (Sport) or changes the gears manually with the optional paddle shifters - the shifting feeling is precise and extremely sporty.

Despite all the dynamics, S tronic is also very efficient. Because of their high efficiency, fuel consumption and pollutant emissions are reduced.
